Sense Memory is a recollection of art as it was and as it could be. Music, Static and Moving Art in combination.
Join us for an evening of new music performed by Scott Burton with video art by Mitchell Craft and Eric Eckhart, and live painting by Shaylen Broughton.
First, we will open with a new piece for guitar and modular synthesizer called The student blinded by wisdom with video art by Mitchell Craft. Next, a piece featuring Burton on guitar and special guest CJ Wolfe on drums who will improvise with artist Shaylen Broughton as she creates a painting in real-time. Finally, Burton will perform a piece entitled Ritual Magick 2 and will be accompanied by the live video manipulation of Eric Eckhart.
The event will be hosted by WCVEs Peter Solomon with an artist Q and A to follow.
Scott Burton is a guitarist and composer living in Richmond, Virginia. For over a decade Scott has been creating music in a wide variety of settings combining composed and free improvised sounds and practices.
For the past few years Scott has been fascinated with the intersection of improvisation and sound design. Through a series of YouTube deep dives and chance meetings, Scott began studying the modular synthesizer and various sound processing modules as a way to bring the guitar and sound manipulation techniques together in performance. These extended capabilities gave way to bigger and bigger sounds, all while leaving the central guitar tone unaffected.
Tonight he will perform two pieces using these techniques. The first piece is called The student blinded by wisdom and the second, Ritual Magick 2.

In March 2014, Broughton began her career as a visual artist. She has exhibited in several group and solo shows in the US, as well as in the UK and Australia. In addition to exhibiting her work, Broughton works with several nonprofits in Richmond VA, leading
community art projects such as large-scale interior murals and after-school art programs. In recent works, Broughton has begun exploring new mediums, including the use of natural water sources to accomplish fluidity in her compositions. Her work is highly experimental and remains in a constant state of change.

In both his work with sound and visuals he explores micro and macro environments, often cosmic or subterranean in nature. Hes also been known to put down a sweet techno jam every once in a while.
